Great Article in the New York Times on Coffee Health

Hey It looks like the New York Times has awoken (probably with a good dose of coffee) to the health benefits of Coffee. The article, which appeared in their August 5th, 2008 online edition (print too, I assume) included some interesting information:

The Myth of Hydration: I'm in Texas, where we've had a plethora of 105 degree days recently. I've constantly heard the admonishment by radio and tv personalities to drink lots of fluids, but to avoid caffiene. Yes, you've got it, this is a myth! Studies reviewed last year found that people who consumed drinks with up to 550 milligrams of caffeine produced no more urine than when drinking fluids free of caffeine. Even a Grande Starbucks Coffee has only 330 milligrams of caffeine, and a 12 oz. Coca Cola has a mere 35 milligrams of caffeine.

Weight Loss: The NY Times Article mentioned a study that found that coffee drinkers who increased their caffeine consumption gained more weight than those who didn’t. But, they also mentioned that for every 75 to 100 milligrams of caffeine, the resulting metabolism increase results in a caloric loss of 75 to 100 Calories. Hmm...lets do the math...say we have one of those Grande Starbucks Coffee's once a day, for 6 days a week. That would put us at around 300 Grande's a year. 300 days, times 87 calories (splitting the difference) equals 26,100 calories. There are, so to speak, 3,500 calories in a pound of weight loss, so that's 7.5 lbs. of weight loss. Oh, wait, that's for 100 milligrams, my Grande has 330, so multiply that times 3 = 22.5 lbs! Multiply that times a decade and I'd have a 30 inch waist. Perhaps the people in the study drank their coffee with a donut???

The article also said that Coffee aids the ability to burn fat for fuel instead of its carbohydrates. Did you hear that? If you're watching your weight, this means that your cup of Joe is going to help you to lose FAT faster! The reason carbohydrate restricted diets work so well is that your body burns the available carbs before burning fat. If you always have a nice little reserve of carbs, then it doesn't get to the fat. Stay tuned for my soon to be best selling book "Losing fat the Starbucks way." Perhaps I can become the Jerod of Starbucks?

Has Dr. Oz been reading Coffee Is Good For You ?

It's hard to say, but it looks like he has come to the same conclusion. Dr. Oz, as seen on Oprah.com, says that Coffee actually as been shown to reduce liver cancer and to be effective with (or with symptoms of) Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. So there are a bunch of different places where coffee can play a role. The reason it got a bad name is because it does have side effects, for example, migraine headaches and heart palpitations. But if you're not having them, coffee is reasonable."

Did we mention, it's good for those bowel movements, too? Dr. Oz suggests 24 ounces of coffee a day is a rational amount. Thank you Dr. Oz, for confirming that coffee is good for you.

Can coffee cure Baldness?

According to a study published in the January 2007 issue of the International Journal of Dermatology, maybe so. But don't start your run to Starbucks just yet. According to the experts, you'd need to drink 60 cups of coffee a day to make this coffee cure work.

German researchers discovered the caffeine connection. They took scalp biopsies from 14 men in the beginning stages of hair loss, extracted hair follicles from the samples and put them in test tubes containing various concentrations of caffeine. After five to eight days, they found that the hairs had grown by 33 and 40 percent. In different test tubes, hair from follicles mixed with testosterone grew much more slowly.

The investigators suggested that caffeine might prove to be a way to stimulate hair growth in men going bald. If so, it probably would be applied to the head in a topical solution. That's one heck of a coffee bean benefit!

Coffee could protect people against Multiple Sclerosis

Caffeine, equivalent to six to eight cups of coffee consumed by a human in a day, could possibly help protect people against multiple sclerosis (MS); a study on mice has shown. (mice LOVE coffee, you know..)

The caffeine blocked a compound called adenosine that triggers the events that lead to the mouse form of MS.

"For MS to develop, immune cells must cross the blood-brain barrier," said the study's principal author Margaret Bynoe, PhD, of Cornell University "Caffeine blocked the adenosine receptor, preventing these immune cells from getting through."

Specifically, caffeine prevented cells from the immune system from entering the brain and damaging the protective coating that surrounds the nerve cells known as myelin.

Doctors and "health gurus" commonly exclude coffee from the diet of people with MS, but it looks like the evidence found at Coffee Is Good for You suggests otherwise.

This Japanese study of the association of coffee drinking and the reduced risk of liver cancer showed a direct correlation of coffee drinking and a decrease in the risk of liver cancer. The study also showed that the risk decreased with the increase in daily consumption. The risk of liver cancer in almost never drinkers in this population was 547.2 cases per 100,000 people over 10 years, but it was 214.6 cases per 100 000 people with drinking coffee on a daily basis.

Harvard Medical Study says Coffee drinking may help against heart disease

Researchers from Harvard School of Public Health, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid studied the effects of coffee consumption on 41, 736 men and 86, 214 women over 18-year and 24-year periods respectively.

They discovered that women who drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee per day had a 25 per cent lower risk of death from heart disease during the study's followup period (1980 to 2004) than non-coffee drinkers. They also had an 18 per cent lower risk of dying from an illness other than cancer or heart disease during followup.

Women who drank five to seven cups of coffee per week had a seven per cent lower risk of death from all causes than non-drinkers.

In men, researchers saw non-statistically significant benefits and no downsides to drinking two to three cups of coffee, or five to seven cups of coffee daily
